Four Things We Learned From Rangers’ Draw Against Hamilton

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard said he was “relieved” to get a point from the game against Hamilton Academical yesterday evening.

A last gasp goal from Accies midfielder Ross Callachan meant the two teams shared the spoils but Gerrard believed that his side deserved nothing from the encounter.

The Gers did get the opener after Brian Easton put through his own net ten minutes from time but they offered very little going forward, whilst also conceding a number of chances.

So what did we learn from the 1-1 draw? Press the next page as we go through our four key takeaways from the game.

1) Ryan Kent’s Form Is A Major Concern

The winger had two good chances in the second half but failed to make the most of either opportunity. His performances in recent months are starting to worry supporters.

After starting the season so brightly, Kent has now scored just two goals in his last 21 league appearances. The 24-year-old needs to do a lot better.

2) McGregor Continues To Defy His Age

Undoubtedly, the Gers would have lost at New Douglas Park if the club’s number one hadn’t pulled off a string of outstanding saves.

McGregor turned 39 at the end of last month, but he is showing no signs of slowing down. The keeper will deserve his new contract if and when he signs on the dotted line.

3) Itten Failed To Take His Chance

With Kemar Roofe sitting on the bench and Alfredo Morelos suspended, Gerrard handed the Swiss striker his chance to start through the middle, but he failed to grab his chance.

Itten has looked impressive at times when he has been given opportunities off the bench, but he didn’t show anything yesterday which suggests he deserves more game time.

4) Rangers Are Unlikely To Keep Zungu

The Light Blues have an option to sign the South African international from Amiens for £2.7m in the summer and, on yesterday’s performance, he is not worth the investment.

Zungu was neat and tidy in possession but he offered very little else. The 28-year-old now has no goals or assists in 15 appearances since his arrival in Scotland back in October.
