Four Reasons Why Rangers Would Be Mad To Take 15M Gamble

The Ibrox Stadium.

Reports in the English press at the end of last week suggested that Rangers are interested in signing Oli McBurnie from Sheffield United this summer.

It is believed the Blades would demand £15m for the forward, despite the fact that he has struggled for form at Bramall Lane since his arrival from Swansea in 2019.

McBurnie would surely be all for the move north of the border, considering he is a boyhood fan of the Light Blues, but would it be a wise decision to sign the 24-year-old?

Press the next page as we give four reasons why manager Steven Gerrard should not gamble on signing the striker.

1) Poor Form

Let’s make no bones about it. McBurnie has flopped since moving to Sheffield United, having scored just one goal and contributed one assist in 24 appearances last season.

The Scotland international cost the Blades an initial £17.5m, and he has failed to pay it back with his performances on the pitch.

2) Lack Of Movement

McBurnie is very much a target man, and while he is pretty useful with his feet, he doesn’t possess the movement to get in behind opposing defences.

The forward would give Steven Gerrard a different option, but he would hardly fit easily into the style of play that the Gers manager has implemented at the club over the past three years.

3) Breaking The Transfer Record In A Global Health Crisis

McBurnie’s current asking price is currently £4m above the amount Rangers paid for Tore Andre Flo in 2000. £15m is a huge outlay, especially when you consider the current financial climate.

Even if the Scottish champions were to reduce Sheffield United’s demands, it would essentially use up all of the club’s summer transfer budget.

4) No Need To Strengthen Up Front

While there will continue to be speculation about Alfredo Morelos’s future, the Colombian international doesn’t seem like he will be leaving Rangers any time soon.

With reports earlier this month suggesting that Jermain Defoe is in talks over a new contract, there isn’t really room for another centre forward, with Kemar Roofe, Fashion Sakala and Cedric Itten also in the first-team squad.
