Five Different Midfielders Rangers Could Sign If Glen Kamara Leaves

The Ibrox Stadium.

With Glen Kamara now being pursued by a number of Premier League clubs, it is fair to assume that Rangers director of football Ross Wilson is looking at potential replacements if the Finnish international is sold.

The Light Blues have reportedly set a £10m asking price so there are no guarantees that a team will match the valuation but the Gers will need to make contingency plans regardless.

Kamara is an all-action midfielder, capable both with and without the ball, so there are specific attributes that will need to be identified in a target to ensure a new signing can fill his boots.

So, who could Rangers sign as a replacement for Kamara? Press the next page as we take a look at five possible options the Scottish champions could consider.

Moreto Cassama (Stade de Reims)

The Guinea-Bissau international is equally as strong in terms of interceptions and progressive passes as Kamara and, while he isn’t able to carry the ball into the final third as efficiently, he is a very capable dribbler.

One concern with Cassama is his discipline. He picked up nine bookings last season and was sent off three times. If Gerrard can get that side of his game sorted out, though, the 23-year-old would be a decent acquisition.

Habib Maiga (Metz)

The Ivorian international is likely to be slightly more expensive than Cassama but the midfielder does have a better all-round game. As well as being a decent passer and dribbler, he is a superb tackler and has the ability to press the ball throughout the 90 minutes.

Maiga has been impressive, playing for a Metz team that surprised many by finishing midtable in Ligue One last season. His partner in midfield, Pape Sarr, has been the subject of interest from a number of EPL clubs but Rangers could consider going after the Senegalese starlet’s partner instead.

Cameron Puertas (Lausanne-Sport)

The former Swiss Under 21 international is very adept at breaking up play in midfield, although he could perhaps tone things down considering he was booked an incredible 14 times last season.

Puertas is not simply a destroyer, though, and like Kamara, he can link up play. The 22-year-old scored five goals and provided five assists in the Swiss Super League

Mickael Malsa (Levante)

The holding midfield player was picked up by Levante on a free transfer from second division outfit CD Mirandes last summer, and he has impressed playing in the Spanish top flight.

Malsa is pretty solid on the ball, as well as being strong in regards to tackles and interceptions. He doesn’t have the same ability when it comes to dribbling and progressive carries like Kamara, though.

Raul Guti (Elche)

The 24-year-old helped Elche to narrowly avoid the drop from La Liga last campaign, starting 33 of their 38 league matches. He is a proficient dribbler and is excellent at intercepting passes.

However, Elche only signed Guti from Real Zaragoza in September for €5m so they would be reluctant to let him go this summer.
