Ex Teammate Suggests Gerrard May NOT Jump Ship Straight Away If Liverpool Job Becomes Available

Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson says his former teammate Steven Gerrard may think twice about taking the job at Anfield if he is in line to be the direct successor to current boss Jurgen Klopp.

The German has won the Champions League and the Premier League during his time with the Reds and Johnson thinks Gerrard would be on a hiding to nothing were he to replace the Reds manager in the role:

“It’s one of those roles, where, with Liverpool doing so well, who would want to step into Klopp’s shoes when he leaves? It’s a difficult one, you kind of can’t win. It’s all about timing though, we have no idea what’s going to happen in four years’ time. But when the door does open if Gerrard thinks it’s the right time, I’m sure he’ll take the job.”

It is an interesting point that Johnson makes but any potential change of the guard at Liverpool is probably some way off. Klopp’s current contract runs until 2024 (coincidentally the same length as Gerrard’s at Rangers).

A lot could happen during that time with there being no guarantees that Gerrard would still be at Ibrox then. The Gers boss will certainly not be thinking that far ahead with his focus likely to be purely on securing the Bears’ 55th league title.
