EIGHT Rangers Players Whose Contracts Will Expire in May

The SPFL season may only be at its midpoint, but nonetheless, Rangers and Michael Beale will already have one eye on next campaign.  One preparation that needs to be made is ensuring that key players whose contracts run out at the end of the campaign are tied down before it’s too late.

These eight Rangers players will be out of contract on May 31, 2023. Who would you like the Gers to keep a hold of? Press the next page as we go through the list of potential departures.

Filip Helander

Filip Helander’s season – and indeed, huge sections of his career – has been ravaged by injuries. He’s currently out of action with a recurring foot injury and hasn’t played a single game for Rangers this campaign.

While a talented defender, the Swedish international’s injury woes make it difficult to justify a new deal. His last Rangers appearance came all the way back in April of 2022.

He joined the club back in 2019, making 35 league appearances in that time. Additionally, he’s also earned 19 senior caps for his native Sweden.

Ryan Jack

One of Rangers’ longest-serving current players, Ryan Jack has been at the club since 2017. He’s been the Gers’ number eight for some time now – but could that time be coming to an end?

At 30, Jack isn’t getting any younger. This season, he’s made 15 appearances for Rangers, scoring one goal – he still has his legs and his energy.

He’s also been given 14 caps for Scotland over the course of his career. If needed, he can also do a job in defence.

Scott Arfield

Canadian veteran Scott Arfield has been a Rangers player since 2018, signing for the club early on in Steven Gerrard’s stint at the club. He’s also spent time at Burnley, Huddersfield and Falkirk.

Despite his advanced footballing age (34), Arfield has been a regular starter for Rangers this season, accumulating 20 SPFL appearances and scoring four goals. He’s also picked up 19 caps for Canada, scoring two goals, before retiring from the international stage in 2022.

While he’s played well for the Gers this campaign, his age needs to be taken into account. Would you like to see him stick around for an extra year?

Ryan Kent

Ryan Kent has been almost ever-present for Rangers this season, with 21 SPFL appearances to his name, alongside three goals and seven assists.

It would be a massive shock if Kent is allowed to leave on a free at the end of the season. Not only is he enjoying a fruitful campaign, at 26, he’s also just approaching his prime.

A former England youth international at U18 and U20 level, he has yet to receive a senior cap.

Kieran Wright

A product of the Rangers youth academy, Kieran Wright hasn’t quite developed into the SPFL-level shot stopper that the Gers may have hoped he would.

While still a competent ‘keeper, it’s difficult to see him cementing a permanent place in the first team ahead of Allan McGregor, Roby McCrorie or Jon McLaughlin.

As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Wright move on at the season’s end. Outside of Rangers, he’s spent time on loan at clubs such as Dumbarton, Alloa and Partick Thistle.

Steven Davis

Like Filip Helander, Steven Davis is currently out of action with an injury. However, unlike Helander, it has been confirmed that Davis’ injury will keep him off the pitch for the rest of the season.

At 38, this is a huge blow for the Northern Ireland international. A long-term injury is a devastating setback when you’re one of Scottish football’s elder statesmen.

Before his injury, Davis played eight games for the Gers in the SPFL, scoring a solitary goal.

Allan McGregor

Another experienced player at Rangers, Allan McGregor will soon turn 41. Despite this, he’s had plenty of game time under Michael Beale, picking up 14 starts in the SPFL this season.

Outside of Rangers, the veteran Scot has spent time at clubs such as Besiktas, Hull City and St. Johnstone.

McGregor’s career has come full circle. He started out at Rangers as a youngster, making his professional debut for the club all the way back in February 2002. It would be fitting to see his career end where it began – but will it happen this season?

Alfredo Morelos

Here’s one player who Rangers fans probably won’t want to see the back of – Alfredo Morelos has been the Gers’ star striker since joining the club back in 2017.

In that time, he’s made 166 appearances and has scored 74 SPFL goals. On top of this, he’s also been given eleven caps for Columbia, scoring a single goal.

There has been talk of Morelos leaving the club in recent months. Michael Beale appears to be a fan of the player – but will he stay beyond the summer?
