‘Douglas Park Will Need To Be A Magician’ Sky Sports Pundit Issues Warning About Rangers’ Finances

Ex-Celtic star Davie Provan has raised questions over how Rangers will cope financially during the enforced break in football.

The Sky Sports pundit believes all Scottish clubs, including his former team, will be finding it tough, but he feels the Gers are in a particularly concerning position:

“Clubs with the biggest wage bills are suffering the most right now. In Scotland, Celtic will have the biggest cash burn. But if they’re eating into their bank balance, what about Rangers?”

“Reportedly requiring £10m to reach season’s end, what nick is the Ibrox balance sheet in? With the share issue and Far Eastern investment on hold because of Covid-19, new chairman Douglas Park will need to be a magician to get Gers through this crisis. Dave King timed his exit well.”

A number of former Celtic players have spoken out about Rangers’ finances in recent weeks; none of whom have inside knowledge about the club.

Although it is likely that the Light Blues will come under some pressure financially, the three-month wage deferral agreed to by players and staff should help matters.

Scottish football can’t lay dormant for very long, though, if it is to survive. There were major concerns when first minister Nicola Sturgeon acknowledged that the public health risk of playing games behind closed doors could be too great.

If that becomes policy then it won’t only be Rangers whose finances will be scrutinised by pundits, with a whole host of clubs likely to be at risk of going out of business.
