Dodds Raises Questions Over Steven Gerrard’s Future At Rangers

Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds has predicted that manager Steven Gerrard will not be given that much more time to prove himself at Ibrox.

The Light Blues are almost certain to end their second season under Gerrard’s stewardship without a trophy and Dodds thinks the Gers boss will need to start winning titles very soon:

“Their season is practically over barring an absolute miracle. Where does that leave Steven Gerrard? How long do you give a manager who has not won a trophy at a club like that?”

“Now I know it is difficult to catch Celtic because they are away out in front financially and they have good foundations. But if you don’t win games and trophies at a club like Rangers then you can’t expect to go on as the manager long term.”

As Dodds acknowledges, there has been progress made under Gerrard but there is still a gap to Celtic, both in terms of finances and the structure that the Old Firm rivals have been able to put in place.

However, as we saw in the Betfred Cup final back in December, there is very little between the two clubs and it really is only fine margins that have prevented Gerrard from lifting a trophy so far.

There is a psychological aspect to it as well, with the Rangers players lacking the experience of winning titles, but it only takes one trophy to provide momentum and supporters will be hoping for a change of fortunes next campaign.
