Defoe Issues Positive Update On His Rangers Future

Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has said he is hoping to have his future resolved as soon as possible. Asked whether he is keen to have everything sorted out in January, the 37-year-old replied:

“I’m on loan so my situation is different. But hopefully, it will be sorted out and I can enjoy this season and we can achieve something special together. Then I can look forward to next season. It’s a special club to play for.”

The former England international is still effectively on an eighteen-month loan spell from English club Bournemouth, but his current deal with the Premier League outfit expires in the summer.

Defoe can sign a pre-contract agreement with Rangers in January that would allow him to move to Ibrox on a free transfer from the Cherries in July.

Manager Steven Gerrard has already stated that he wants Defoe to stay and the player himself seems keen to remain as well. However, wages are probably a stumbling block.

The striker is reportedly on a six-figure weekly salary at Bournemouth and the player will have to be willing to take a significant pay cut in order to secure his permanent switch to Scotland.
