Coach Reveals Gerrard Called Him “Personally” About Signing £5m Rated Striker

The former head coach of Egyptian club Zamalek has revealed that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard did contact him about signing forward Mostafa Mohamed.

The Light Blues were heavily linked with the Egyptian international earlier this season, and Milutin Sredojevic has confirmed there was genuine interest in the 22-year-old:

“Steven Gerrard called me personally to ask about Mostafa Mohamed. He wanted to know what he was like as a player and at training.”

“But Zamalek made it very difficult for the transfer to go through because they don’t want to be looked at as a selling club. So the transfer never happened, but Steven Gerrard was very keen indeed for the move to go through.”

It is believed that Zamalek demanded £5m for Mohamed, which no doubt put off Rangers from making a bid during the January transfer window.

Instead, the Gers opted to bring in Florian Kamberi on loan from Hibernian, with the Albanian having impressed since his move to Ibrox.

Whether the Scottish club will ever make another attempt to sign Mohamed in the future, it is up for debate. The Egyptian has had an unspectacular season for Zamalek, having scored eight goals in 24 appearances.

He has not been a prolific goalscorer in his career so far, though, but it appears Rangers’ scouts do see real potential in the player.
