Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes that Connor Goldson may well be swayed by the salary he could earn in the English Premier League or Championship.
The centre-back has revealed that he is unaware of what’s happening with plans to renew his contract, despite his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
Ferguson claims Goldson would be knocking hard on manager Steven Gerrard’s door if he was genuinely keen to stay and he thinks the wages he could earn back in England could tempt him to move on a free transfer next summer:
“Money is different up here than it is down in England. I’m sure that he’s on a decent salary up here but if he wants to continue to win trophies then he’s at a massive club so he’s better staying here.”
“It comes down to the boy and whether he wants to play in the English Premier League. I’m sure there’s a few clubs looking at him because I think he’s good enough to play in the English Premier League.”
“I’d like to see him stay for another season or two. The problem you’ve got is that the Championship pays huge salaries as well now so it comes down to whether Rangers can compete with salaries in the Championship – they can’t.”
It does seem as though Goldson is waiting to see what offers arrive for him. West Ham are the team who have been most heavily linked with the defender.
This isn’t an ideal situation for the Gers who need to have all of their key players committed to the cause. There is a possibility that negotiations are still underway to extend the 28-year-old’s contract, but there could be a large difference between the two sides that needs to be bridged. We will find out more in the coming months.
